Life insurance: kidney warming method



Talking about low cost life insurance,A56-year-old woman is the first person in the world to have received a kidney which has gone through an innovative warming process.
Deborah Bakewell suffered renal failure after being diagnosed with rare polycystic kidney disease.
The genetic illness slowly leads to kidney failure. Mrs Bakewell was on dialysis for nine hours each night during a period of two years.
But scientists have said 17 patients, including Mrs Bakewell, have all successfully had kidney donations featuring organs that were treated with a new normothermic perfusion technique and achieved low cost life insurance.
The technique involves using oxygenated blood to warm the kidney so as to reverse any damage caused by storing the organ in a cold area.
Damaged kidneys from "marginal donors", including older people or those with diabetes or high blood pressure, are also given a boost by the technique, and the chances of the organ being rejected decrease also the best low cost life insurance has been achieved.
According to experts, the warming method could raise the number of kidney transplants and make organs last longer.
The number of kidneys available from marginal donors may also increase by about 500 every 12 months.
Leicester General Hospital was the location where the 17 operations took place. They were carried out on 12 women and five men. It is the first hospital worldwide to use the process in practice.
